The Vision
Crowns Before Chains exists to make rigorous African history accessible to readers outside the academy. We believe the stories of kingdoms, theologians, scholars, and leaders who shaped the continent — and the world — should not be locked behind paywalls or buried in footnotes.
Our work bridges scholarship and storytelling. We trace the archives, read the sources, and present what we find with clarity and care. Every article is an invitation to see the past as it was: complex, consequential, and deeply human.
This is not about nostalgia or myth-making. It is about restoring narratives that were erased, and giving them the serious, honest treatment they deserve.
Our Approach
Every claim we make is anchored in sources we can name. We prioritize primary texts, established scholarship, and transparent reasoning — because history collapses when evidence is treated as optional.
Complex history does not need to be obscure. We write for curious readers, not specialists, translating archival depth into clear, compelling prose that honors the material without diluting it.
We approach the people and cultures we study with humility. The archives are not props for spectacle; they are entrusted memories, and we handle them with the seriousness they deserve.
The Creator
Crowns Before Chains is created by Stan, a historian and content creator based in Germany with deep roots in Italian and African history. CBC exists to tell the stories that shaped the continent — and the world.
